Albion Online's Dragonfire Update Introduces the Ancient Lands on August 31
A new region built around portal-based exploration, scalable PvP, and island-to-island progression arrives later this month.
The Dragonfire update, launching August 31, brings Albion Online's largest structural addition in some time: the Ancient Lands, a distinct region that layers exploration, PvE objectives, and PvP conflict into a single connected system.
What changed
- Portals appear throughout the open world, with size determining the party scale they admit
- Small portals target solo players and small groups; they appear with little warning, enabling spontaneous runs
- Large portals support parties of up to 20 players and are announced in advance, organizing content for larger groups
- Matchmaking within each portal size pairs parties against groups of similar scale — a solo player will not be thrown against a full five-person party
- PvP lethality depends on portal location: portals in the Outlands and Red Zones lead to a lethal version of the Ancient Lands; Yellow Zone portals open into a non-lethal Orange Zone variant
- Inside, each party begins on its own floating island at the region's outer edge, separated from other groups
- Progress requires defeating Keeper mobs to fulfil Fame objectives, which causes a Keystone to appear
- The Keystone activates one of the island's teleporters, connecting it to a neighbouring island; activated teleporters are accessible to every group present
- Keystones can be moved between teleporters to redirect available routes
The design, presented by Co-Creative Director Michael Schwahn, Game Designer Marco Nogielsky, and Environment Artist Johannes Geier, positions the Ancient Lands as a space where cautious PvE progression and contested PvP territory overlap — giving players meaningful choices about when and how to push forward.
