MarginCall's Digital Frontier Update Overhauls Crypto and Data Centers

A sweeping rework of how cryptocurrency pricing, mining, and data infrastructure work brings the game's economic simulation closer to how these systems actually behaved across different eras.

MarginCall's Digital Frontier Update, published by Gmodgoon on 19 August 2026, addresses three long-standing gaps in the game's crypto simulation: anachronistic coin pricing, single-coin mining, and data centers that were little more than abstract number generators.

What changed

Crypto pricing by era

  • Coins now open at a price appropriate to the starting year. Begin in a later period and Bitcoin trades in the thousands, Ethereum in the hundreds, and smaller coins in cents.
  • Players starting in 1990 still watch every coin launch cheap and appreciate over time, preserving the original progression.

Eight minable coins

  • Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Monero, Dash, and Zcash can all be mined via proof-of-work, each appearing in the mining picker after its in-game launch date.
  • Mining rewards scale with hash power; rival miners dilute the player's share.
  • Early mining of young coins is designed to reward accumulation rather than immediate returns, reflecting how low-value coins historically grew.

Data Centers become physical infrastructure

  • A Data Center is now a building stocked with servers rather than a static stat.
  • New centers start empty, acquire servers over time to fill racks, and gain hash or hosting capacity as the fleet grows.
  • Servers carry a real running cost and create demand for player-produced factory goods.
  • Rival companies also grow, list, and compete dynamically over time.

Existing saves are confirmed compatible. For players building industrial or investment empires, the update transforms crypto from a side abstraction into a layered business with meaningful timing decisions and genuine operational costs.
