NotifyXR Launches on Steam as a Full SteamVR Notification Overlay
A new SteamVR overlay that surfaces desktop and OS notifications inside a VR headset has launched out of the gate as a complete product — not early access.
NotifyXR, developed by MachCoyote, is now available for purchase on the Steam Store. The application functions as a SteamVR overlay, pulling notifications from a user's desktop or operating system and displaying them inside a VR headset. A 15% launch discount is running for one week from release.
The developer chose a full release rather than early access, describing this version as a complete product.
Steam Frame Support
MachCoyote has stated an intention to support the upcoming Steam Frame natively. An aarch64 build — the architecture the Steam Frame uses — already exists, and the plan is to include it with NotifyXR once it can be properly integrated into the Steam backend. This may ship initially as a beta update, pending the developer receiving a Steam Frame unit for testing.
Ideas Under Consideration
The announcement outlines several possible future directions, explicitly marked as non-commitments that may never materialize:
- Greater Discord integration — potentially previewing profile pictures and message attachments in notifications, and allowing some level of interaction, via a custom Vencord plugin
- Game Detection & Per-Game Profiles — automatically switching notification settings based on the detected active game
- Better Per-App Policy Controls — additional settings beyond the current notification and sound toggles
- Pulse Mode — mentioned but the source text cuts off before a description is provided
For players who routinely miss desktop alerts while in VR, a dedicated overlay shipped as a finished product rather than a work-in-progress is a meaningfully lower-risk purchase.
