Fallout 4 Update Raises Mod Archive Limit Fourfold, Fixes Several Crashes
What changed
The August 18th update to Fallout 4 arrives with a mix of modding infrastructure improvements, platform-specific additions, and crash fixes that will be felt most by heavy modders and Creation Kit users.
The headline change for mod enthusiasts: the BA2 archive limit climbs from 256 to 1024, a fourfold increase designed to accommodate larger mod collections without hitting a hard ceiling.
Platform and Creations updates:
- Creation Kit archives are now supported on PlayStation.
- New file types —
.nif,.dds,.bink,.cdx,.csg,.wav, and.fuz(with embedded.wav) — are supported for PlayStation Creations. - Bink files can be added to Creation uploads via an Extra Files browser.
- Creations up to 2 GB in size can now be uploaded for Xbox.
- Localization export support has been added.
- Localized string fixes applied to UI and platform terminology.
Crash fixes:
- A crash when opening the Virtual Keyboard on Steam Deck has been resolved.
- A top crash caused by a streaming audio error has been fixed.
- A crash on the Microsoft Store when entering Creations menus after reconnecting to the internet is resolved.
Bug fixes and Creation Kit corrections:
- Archiving a plugin that uses pre-existing assets in a new form no longer duplicates those assets.
- Material or heightmap terrain edits now generate grass properly.
- Running LipGen from the command line or as a launch argument now correctly produces
.lipfiles. - Searching and exiting a specific Creation now properly returns players to that Creation's Details page.
- The Search and Replace tool has been updated to match Starfield's implementation, adding "Select Form in Object Window" and "Open Form Editor" buttons.
For modders pushing large load orders or building content through the Creation Kit, this update removes friction at nearly every step.
