The Sorting Bureau Launches at 30% Off Its First Two Weeks

The Sorting Bureau (AppID 4120790) is now available on Steam, carrying a launch discount of 30% for its first two weeks. A demo preceded it in May; everything developed after that went into the full release.

The game was conceived in the fall of 2025 when developer Dmitrii Zaitsev described the idea to collaborator Maria: a large desk covered in small objects, sorted into boxes. The setting migrated early in development — an initial vision of a European canal town eventually gave way to the outskirts of Tokyo.

What the game is

  • Players sort objects belonging to a small cast of unnamed, faceless clients — known only through their possessions and handwritten notes
  • Characters include Watanabe (Japanese stamps), Amélie (candy), and Nagisa (beach shells)
  • Communication is limited entirely to notes; there is no dialogue and no phone calls
  • No score, no timer, no performance tracking
  • No music (the source text ends mid-sentence on this point)

The absence of pressure mechanics is deliberate. Zaitsev writes that making order out of chaos was conceived as a way to quiet anxious thoughts — and that intention shaped every design choice, from the faceless characters to the silence.

For players who find conventional games overstimulating, The Sorting Bureau is built around a single, considered premise: tidiness as its own reward.

Update 1.0.5: Controls, and settings for them

Demo Update 0.8.1 — the cat now reacts when you click on him
