Compile & Defend

A tower defense game where you don't click to shoot — you write code your towers run every tick, in Python, JavaScript, C++, C#, Rust, Zig or Lua. Prioritize threats with if, sweep swarms with for, and route air, armor and camo to the right tower. Better algorithms beat more towers.

Stop the wave and read your variables

Stop the wave and read your variables A breakpoint could already stop the wave on a line. What it couldn't do was tell you anything. You got a highlighted line and a hover tooltip, and if you wanted to know which enemy your loop had actually picked, you were reading your own code and guessing. This update adds the thing that was missing: a real inspector. Every variable, laid out. Objects and lists drill open, so you can walk me into its enemy list and into one enemy's fields. Watch expressions. Type best.distance_to_exit — or any expression, not just a name — and watch it while you step. Console output. Whatever your script printed on the tick you're looking at, in your language's own spelling. Step forward, and step backward. The tick is recorded before you step through it, so you can walk back into the loop you just came out of. Stepping never runs your code again, so it can never hang the game. It's a window, so put it where you want it The inspector is a floating window, like the Language Reference. Drag it by its title bar, and drag it most of the way off the bottom of the screen when it's covering the thing you're trying to look at — the title bar always stays grabbable, so you can never lose it. A 🐞 button opens it whenever you want it, not only when a breakpoint fires. A ▁ button parks it as a tab at the bottom of the screen, one click from coming back. Your watches survive the run. Hit Continue and the wave carries on with the inspector still open, still watching the same expressions. Previously resuming cleared everything you'd typed in, which made the feature…

1.5.1 - Replaying a tutorial stage is one click now

    From the recorded announcement

A player wrote in about chasing a third star on an early tutorial stage. Getting back to it took eight steps: main menu, continue into wave 7, delete the code, paste in the older stage's code, beat a level you didn't want to play, stage select, delete the code again, paste wave 7's back. We fixed it. Four separate…

Four separate things were wrong. Every stage remembers its own code, the tutorial kept one script for all seven stages, which is why the fastest route involved a clipboard. Now each stage remembers what you last ran on it. Advancing normally still keeps the script you're writing; only jumping to a specific stage restores that stage's code. Stage select where you actually need it, pause menu, wave-cleared screen, breach screen. Plus Replay This Wave next to Next Wave. TUTORIAL opens a stage list with each stage's stars and its best run (best: no leaks · 61 ops peak (par 90)), so a row tells you which star you're missing and by how much. Starting over is behind a confirmation and only rewinds the tutorial.

1.5.0 - Campaign maps now open with stars

Campaign maps now open with stars Every campaign map used to be open from the first launch. Stars were awarded, printed on the tiles, and then nothing ever asked for them. Now they open the campaign. The whole Beginner tier is free — four maps to play on a brand new save. Intermediate and Advanced maps have a star price, shown on the tile. Stars are never spent, only counted, so you keep every one you earn. Hard opens on a map once you've beaten its Normal, and Hardcore once you've beaten its Hard. Per map, not globally. Easy and Normal are always open. Stars come from tutorial stages and from campaign clears — 21 in the tutorial alone, and three per map per difficulty. Custom and Workshop levels don't count toward it, or a one-wave level would be a star farm. Nothing about the maps themselves changed. No gold, lives, tower caps, waves or enemy numbers moved, so every map still plays exactly as it did. Already played? It's your call. This landed after release, which means an existing save could open the campaign screen and find maps it had already beaten sitting behind a lock. That's not something to do to someone quietly. So the first time you launch after this update, if you've played before, the game asks: Keep everything unlocked — every map and difficulty stays open, the way you left it. Use star progression — the new gates apply, and the stars already on your save count toward them immediately. Neither option erases anything. Your stars, medals, scores, best rounds and pact clears are untouched either way — the choice only decides whether the locks apply to you. And…
