Demon Protocol Gains Rotating Planet Backdrops Tied to Wave Bands
The August 8 update replaces static backgrounds with a layered cosmological dressing that shifts as players push deeper into the wave ladder.
Demon Protocol's August 8 update — titled the Planet Update — adds animated celestial backdrops to every wave band in the game, giving each tier of play a distinct visual identity rooted in the solar system and beyond.
What changed
- Rotating planets now occupy the upper-right of the play field, slowly spinning with dynamic lighting. The planet assigned to each wave band is fixed:
- Waves 1–5 → Earth
- Waves 6–10 → Mars
- Waves 11–15 → Saturn
- Waves 16–20 → Toxic (unnamed world)
- Waves 21–25 → Hell
- Orbiting moons accompany each world, travelling on tilted elliptical paths that carry them in front of and behind the planet with correct occlusion.
- Saturn's rings are rendered with the same occlusion logic, passing in front of and behind the globe as they rotate.
- Boss waves swap the orbiting planet for a Moon-Patrol-style scrolling surface: jagged far mountains, a mid-ridge, and a cratered foreground ground rendered in parallax along the bottom of the screen.
The update is purely presentational, but the layered parallax work — particularly the occlusion handling on moons and rings — suggests a level of craft that rewards players who reach the later wave bands.
