Holy Mole Update Reworks Upgrade Tree and Fixes Persistent Save Bugs
A focused patch addresses two progression-breaking save issues while substantially restructuring the upgrade tree around coins, cost reductions, and early-game accessibility.
Developer sernna has pushed an update to Holy Mole that combines bug fixes with a meaningful redesign of how the upgrade tree is structured and priced.
What changed
Bug fixes
- Mole levels now persist when returning to the main menu — previously they reset entirely.
- Broken debris remains broken after returning to the main menu.
Upgrade tree
- Gem magnets have been reworked into coin magnets. The stated rationale: gems were already easy to collect; coins were not. Existing owners of those nodes automatically receive the coin-magnet behavior.
- Special Magnet cost reduced from 600,000 to 20,000, timed to align with when drills that produce gold and jade become available.
- Several cheaper upgrades added at the start of the Power, Speed, Economy, and Magnet branches to accelerate early-game progression.
- Money multipliers reworked.
- Backpack upgrades are no longer locked behind the expensive magnet chain; Backpack II is also cheaper.
- Nodes across the tree reordered so cheaper upgrades consistently appear first.
Other
- Moles level up faster, with higher levels now granting a much larger speed boost.
Taken together, the changes lower the cost barrier across most branches of the upgrade tree while fixing save-state bugs that were quietly erasing player progress between sessions.
