A wide-ranging patch reshapes how hard the game fights back — or relents — depending on how well you are playing.

Mortal Shell II

The September 2026 update for Mortal Shell II introduces an experimental Adaptive Difficulty system alongside a set of targeted combat and Shell ability corrections.

What changed

Adaptive Difficulty (off by default)

  • Found under Game > Game Settings > Adaptive Difficulty; can be toggled at any time.
  • When winning, enemies gain damage, health, and break resistance — scaling past the game's original upper limit with no ceiling while victories continue.
  • When struggling, those same three values decrease, and a cap prevents any single hit from killing a player outright from full health.
  • Adjustments ease back toward standard balance on their own over time.
  • The system never softens Night Mode difficulty, though it can still push it harder.
  • No on-screen indicator exists yet; the developers note this will be addressed in a future update.

Parrying, Dodging and Ripostes

  • Consecutive parries with the Infinite Seal now allow the follow-up parry window to extend into the wind-up animation, making multi-hit strings parriable rather than only the first strike.
  • Status effects can now be applied to enemies during their riposte recovery animation.

Shell abilities — Sariel

  • Thornfall now functions in enclosed spaces and no longer fails when a low ceiling is present.
  • Thornfall now prioritises locked-on targets and connects with moving targets.
  • Agonize no longer requires full pain to activate.
  • Affliction now shares damage across all cursed enemies and inflicts curse on those not already afflicted.

The adaptive system in particular shifts Mortal Shell II's difficulty from a fixed contract into a responsive one — a meaningful structural change for both newcomers and players looking to push beyond what the base game was balanced around.
