Terrarium II

Terrarium II's latest update reworks the game's Orbie NPCs from the ground up, addressing what was perhaps their most immersion-breaking quality: they vanished the moment a conversation ended.

What changed

Persistence & quests

  • Orbies now remain in the world until their associated quest is completed, rather than disappearing after a single interaction.
  • The quest system now supports offer, acceptance, reminder, and completion dialogue states, along with EXP rewards on completion.

Personality-driven dialogue

  • Each Orbie is assigned one of three personality types — Plant, Tech, or Fairy — each with its own dialogue style and idle conversation pool.

Trade and friendship

  • Trades grant items, EXP, and friendship points without despawning the Orbie.
  • Friendship accumulates as players help Orbies, raising their level and unlocking improved dialogue and rewards.

Expanded data structure

  • Orbies now carry names, personality tags, dialogue pools, friendship and level values, quest and trade states, and a foundation for rare variants.

Spawning logic

  • A new ground-scan system restricts Orbie spawns to open surface tiles — no underground, cave, cliff, or overhang locations, and open air above the spawn point is required.

Taken together, the changes shift Orbies from throwaway flavor encounters toward something closer to a lightweight relationship system, giving players a reason to seek them out rather than dismiss them.
