Hearts of Iron IV Beta Update Refreshes Threading Libraries for Modern CPUs
The second Summer Open Beta patch shifts focus from balance to infrastructure, targeting performance on hardware that looks nothing like 2016's four-core machines.
Tech Lead Pdxen opens the patch notes with a frank observation: a lot has changed in PC hardware since Hearts of Iron IV launched. CPUs that once shipped with four cores and roughly eight hardware threads have given way to chips with more cores, more threads, and — critically — heterogeneous core architectures. The game's threading libraries had not kept pace.
What changed
- Threading libraries updated to better accommodate modern hardware configurations, with the stated aim of improving performance on some machines
- Multiplayer host hardening strengthened for operations such as kicking and banning players, addressing malicious interactions reported on the forums
Pdxen is candid about the scope of the change: updating threading at a fundamental level across a wide variety of player hardware carries real risk, which is precisely why it is being tested in open beta before a broader rollout.
On the design side, Game Designer Zwirbaum notes that balance changes and experimental features are paused for this update but are expected to resume in the near future — no timeline is given.
A follow-up beta update was already in preparation at the time of publishing, suggesting player feedback from this build turned around quickly.
For those who have noticed multiplayer sessions disrupted by bad actors, the host-side hardening is the more immediately tangible fix; the threading work will matter most to players on newer hardware who want to know whether the engine can better use what their machine offers.
