Necesse 'Rust & Romance' Update Adds Settler Personalities, Romance System
A substantial content update reshapes how settlers behave and relate to the player, while a free weekend and 50% sale lower the barrier to entry.
The Necesse Rust & Romance Update is now live on Steam, published July 30, 2026, by developer Jonas. Previous saves remain compatible, though a new world is recommended to experience all additions in full.
What changed
- Settler Personalities — each settler now has a personality made up of two components: perks (improving things like combat prowess or work efficiency) and preferences (governing needs and wants). Work breaks have been replaced with recreation time, making settlers more active in the settlement.
- Romance system — players can begin dating settlers by giving them a flower, triggering a series of unique romance quests that may progress the relationship further.
- The Scrapyard — the source references a new area called The Scrapyard, though details were cut off before full description.
Alongside the update, a Steam Free Weekend is running, and Necesse is offered at a 50% discount — described in the announcement as the largest discount since version 1.0.
For players who have invested time in the settlement layer, the personality system appears to be the meatiest addition: settlers can be sought out and optimised to become meaningfully stronger fighters or faster workers, adding a new dimension to what was previously a more passive system.
