Season 5: A Grim Doctrine is now live in Overwatch, arriving on October 6 at 11am PT with a cluster of changes that touch the hero roster, the map pool, and the game's seasonal event slate.

What changed

  • New Support hero — Doctrine: Freed from a volcanic prison by Doomfist, Doctrine manipulates life using an Eternal Scepter and mechanical drones, with an ability-enhancing mechanic called Infuse.
  • New Escort map — Watchpoint: Grímsvötn: Set in the Icelandic prison that once held both Doctrine and Doomfist, this is described as the first new Escort map since Overwatch 2 launched.
  • Sombra moves to Support: The hacker transitions out of her previous role into the Support category.
  • Roadhog rework: His Scrap Gun has been revamped and he gains an all-new ability called Trash Compactor.
  • Halloween event — Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games: Players begin each match as a random hero, gain random powers on death, and complete challenges to collect Offerings toward summoning more heroes into the mode.
  • New cosmetics: The Season 5 Ultimate Battle Pass and Shop include a Dokiwatch 2.0 collaboration, a new Mythic skin for Wuyang, and a new Mythic weapon skin for Lúcio.
  • Additional seasonal features: Drives coming to Quick Play and Unvaulted Battle Passes are noted as forthcoming during the season.

For players, the Sombra role swap and Roadhog rework are the changes most likely to ripple through competitive play, while Doctrine's arrival expands the Support pool at the same time the roster's existing heroes are being reshuffled.
