Knaights 'Regicide' Update Overhauls AI, Difficulty, and a Dozen Systems
A sweeping patch restructures how the enemy thinks, adds four difficulty tiers, and touches nearly every layer of the game.
The Regicide update for Knaights, published 14 September 2026 by Zagmojo, is one of the broader patches the game has seen — the enemy AI alone received a ground-up rework, and the changes extend from core difficulty selection to individual UI buttons.
What changed
Difficulty
- Four tiers on new singleplayer games: Coward, Adventurer, Knight, and King.
- King difficulty unlocks after a first singleplayer win.
Enemy AI
- The enemy now drafts perks strategically, commits to a plan, and rebuilds when behind — it no longer hoards resources instead of building.
- At Knight difficulty and above, the AI plans buildings, perks, training, and attacks rather than guessing.
- The enemy deploys shacks, walls, and spells earlier; pairs dogs with questing knights; recalls units when its castle is threatened; sells surplus animals; and summons dragons.
Gameplay
- Perk offers now weight early picks toward early options and late picks toward late options.
- Pack Hunt perk has been retired.
- Dragons now reach 2 columns while still counting as melee.
- Primal Fury now boosts dogs paired with a knight.
- Imps no longer consume troop capacity.
- Barn Sell buttons appear beside each animal with their payout; beavers can now be sold.
- Turn resolution plays at half speed.
- Local Hotseat no longer grants unlocks or achievements.
Interface and visuals
- A new Default Skins option overrides all troops to their default appearance.
- Skins chosen at battle start persist for the full battle; enemy skins are set per battle; skins for unseen units are hidden until encountered.
- All troops now animate while moving; flying and mechanical units do not.
- Unavailable buttons display a reason on hover or focus.
- The quest badge allows players to re-read their last quest report.
- New players are directed to the tutorial from the title screen.
- Erasing save data now also clears the Steam Cloud copy.
Taken together, the update's most consequential shift is the AI rework — an opponent that actually spends resources and follows a strategy changes the game's fundamental tension.
