War Thunder's CA-27 Brings Australian Sabre Variant to British Tech Tree
A work-in-progress reveal shows how a heavily modified F-86 derivative could plug a long-standing gap in Britain's early jet fighter lineup.
Blitzkrieg Wulf, writing for the War Thunder community announcements, has offered a first look at the CA-27 — an Australian jet fighter destined for the game's British research tree in a future major update, the name of which has not yet been announced.
Though the CA-27 shares its silhouette with the American F-86 Sabre, the source material is clear that it is treated as a distinct aircraft. The differences run deep.
What changed from the F-86
- Engine: The original powerplant is replaced by a Rolls-Royce Avon, which required a full redesign of the air intake and rear fuselage.
- Armament: Machine guns are gone; 30 mm ADEN autocannons take their place.
- Ordnance: New external weaponry is described as new to the F-86 series.
- Wings: Modified to accommodate both fuel tanks and a full external weapons load.
The model is being built from scratch by Valve's artists — correction, by War Thunder's artists — working from historical documentation and photographs. All specifications and visuals remain subject to change before release.
For British tree players, the announcement frames the CA-27 as a maneuverable dogfighter that the early jet ranks have lacked, with handling described as familiar to Hunter pilots but delivered in the more agile Sabre airframe. A fuller showcase is promised closer to the update's release.
